In 2001, a research was carried out to choose fauna specimens for new denominations of the Brazilian real. The two most voted animal specimens — sea turtle and golden lion tamarin — were already used in the BRL 2.00 and BRL 20.00, respectively. The third one more voted, the maned wolf, will feature on the new banknote. In fact, it will not be the first time that it appears in Brazilian currency. Between December 1993 and September 1994, 90 million coins of CR$ 100.00 (one hundred 'cruzeiros reais') stamped the mammal.
